On 25.08.2026, an apparatus of three copper-wire-wound rings, similar to a Helmholtz coil, was installed near Macapá, Amapá. Aligned to the local declination and inclination of the site, a regulated current through the windings generated, over a temporary counter-field of exactly equal strength and opposite direction to the Earth’s magnetic field. The local magnetic field was fully cancelled for this period: a null field, in which the compass has no effect and north-south orientation is cancelled.

The intervention took place in and around the Estádio, whose midfield line is meant to separate the northern from the southern hemisphere.

Macapá, capital of the Brazilian state of Amapá, sits on the equator, the geographic zero point of the planet. The Zerão’s midfield line was laid out in 1990 to the surveying standards of the time as the equator line. Today’s more precise GPS measurement shows: the actual equator lies 50 metres south of it. The work takes place at various points along this line, at the true line between north and south, the geographically exact equator.

Amapá is the only Brazilian state with no road connection to the rest of the country. The mouth of the Amazon is over 300 kilometres wide at this point; rainforest and river channels cut the region off from any land link. Macapá can only be reached by air, or by river over several days.

Macapá also lies within the South Atlantic Anomaly, a region of anomalously weak magnetic field. Here the field is not only horizontal, it is weaker, thinner, more open.

The cancellation of the field itself remains hidden from view. What arises on site is the presence of a structure without visual access: a state of space that is there without showing itself.

Test run: Teresina

En route, in Teresina, a test run with the same apparatus took place in front of the church Nossa Senhora do Amparo, on a compass rose set into the ground.
